A hardware wallet puts you in charge of your private keys. The setup is straightforward, but the recovery phrase it creates deserves your full attention. This original guide is here to help you understand the process before you begin; use Trezor’s official instructions on your screen as the final authority.
Before connecting anything, choose a calm moment and a private place. Have your device and its cable nearby, make sure your computer is up to date, and allow yourself time to read each prompt. There is no prize for rushing through a security decision. If a step looks different from what you expect, pause and confirm it through Trezor’s official help centre instead of guessing.
01Find the real starting point
Type trezor.io/start into your browser yourself. Check the spelling and the secure connection, and avoid setup links in unsolicited messages, search ads, or social posts. The official site will guide you to the right software for your device.
↗ 02Connect and follow your device
Unpack your wallet and connect it using the supplied cable. Install or open the official Trezor Suite only through Trezor’s website. Read the device display as well as the computer screen: confirm actions on the device itself, and never approve anything you did not initiate.
⌁ 03Protect your recovery phrase
Your device will guide you through creating or recording a recovery backup. Write the words in their exact order and store them offline somewhere private and durable. Anyone with this phrase may be able to access your assets. Never photograph it, save it in a cloud account, or share it—not even with someone claiming to be support.
✳ 04Verify before your first transfer
Choose a strong PIN if prompted and complete every check in the official setup flow. When you are ready to receive crypto, verify the address on the hardware wallet’s own screen character by character. Consider a small test transaction first, then keep your software and device firmware current through official channels.
✓ When setup is complete, keep your wallet somewhere you can find it and your backup somewhere secure but separate. A PIN protects access to the physical device; the recovery phrase restores access if the device is lost or damaged. They serve different purposes, so protect both thoughtfully. Your crypto is not stored inside the device itself: the wallet helps you securely manage the keys that control access on the blockchain.
